Life in a ‘New Town’ 31/01/09

I travelled to Milton Keynes on Wednesday evening – Justin went into hospital for an operation and I was the ‘responsible adult’ to escort him home, but have been playing nurse since. Milton Keynes is one of the country’s ‘New Towns’ built in the late 1960s to 70s along with the likes of Telford and an expanded Northampton. The New Towns Act 1946 (later 1964) was an act which proposed the construction of meticulously planned complete towns to help with housing shortages in and around London after World War II. Since then, ‘New Towns’ have popped up all around the UK.

They’re Probably Right 27/01/09

There's probably no God. Now stop worrying, and enjoy your life.

I expect you’ve all heard about the Atheist Bus Campaign started by Ariane Sherine in October last year to counter an unsettling Christian advertisement spotted on London buses (see Why should we put up with religious ads on the side of buses?). I expect you’ve also heard all the controversy. Well, I’m thrilled that free speech has prevailed and that anyone who wants to promote a faith (or lack thereof) is pretty much entitled to; if you use the word ‘probably’.

The Party 25/01/09

I’ll go right out and say it, my mum got me a really special Gucci watch for my birthday! It has a rectangular face (which does admittedly make it hard to read, but fashion over function, right?) and has two diamonds in it. It came in a gold box within a larger gold box – I was oddly excited by this!

Of course it was way too big to fit around my tiny wrist so we went to the jewellers on Saturday morning where they took out all of the extra links. At the same time me and my mum got a chance to walk around Bournemouth town centre where she bought me a new pair of gloves (my others were stolen – how odd) and a scarf. We also stopped at a cafe to eat toasted cheese sandwiches for lunch.
